Previous Arran Wildlife Festivals
Every
year since 2006 visitors have flocked to the Isle of Arran in May to
enjoy a feast of wildlife walks and fun packed activities. Over the
years the Isle of Arran Wildlife Festival has evolved from a dream of a
small core of committed individuals, to what is now a vast programme
spanning 8 days and supported by dozens of volunteers, local wildlife
enthusiasts and visiting specialists. It is this dedicated team that is
the secret of the festival's success.
2006
The
first ever Arran Wildlife Festival took place over a long weekend on
the 27th -31st May. The idea evolved from a desire to share Arran 's
special wildlife with locals and visitors alike. From the outset,
conservationists worked in partnership with local volunteers and
businesses to bring people closer to wildlife through guided walks,
talks and boat trips.
2007
The
previous year was such a success that the organisers expanded the
festival to a huge 8 days. Highlights included golden eagles, otters,
hen harriers and even a porpoise feeding frenzy that was captured on
film by festival participants. The weather left a lot to be desired
during this week but it didn't put off the wildlife or their human
admirers!
2008
In
2008 we were able to build upon the success of previous years and were
thrilled that we had found a format that worked. Many of our visitors
came for their third festival and were rewarded with fabulous weather
and as always views of amazing wildlife. Even the seafaring trip to see
the spectacular seabird colonies of Ailsa Craig was a relatively calm
affair.
2009
2009
was our most ambitious year to date and we launched a number of new
projects and ideas for the festival. We were able to offer first
aid training to our volunteers thanks to a grant from North Ayshire
Council, and the schools event was HUGE literally, as we invited the
Cool Seas Roadshow's life size inflatebles along for the week.
This was sponsored by the Co-op, Calmac, Stagecoach and the
Auchrannie, who between them sorted the logistics of transporting and
housing such a massive event. and all those children!
