Otter

Description
Otters are large mammals reaching 1-1.5m in length with their thick tapering tail accounting for a third of this total. They have thick waterproof fur, which is a rich brown colour on their backs with their underside a paler, creamier colour and they have very prominent strong whiskers. These coats must be kept in prime condition so otters spend a lot of time grooming the fur.
Where
After many years of decline otters are making a good recovery and numbers are on the increase. As a consequence otters are found round the entire coast, including in the larger villages. Some of the best otter watching can be done from the comfort of your car along the quieter coasts but keep your eyes peeled wherever you are as they have been seen in the centre of villages or round the harbour at Brodick.
When
Dawn and dusk are the best times for otter watching particularly if the tide is rising. A calm seas increases your chances, they can be difficult to spot in the water as their heads barely break the surface. You can be sure it is an otter you are watching if you wait until it dives for food when the thick pointed tail briefly comes out of the water. If you are lucky you may come across one at any time of the day though especially in the quieter winter months.
