Red Squirrel
Red Squirrel

Description
Arran is a stronghold for the red squirrel as there are no grey squirrels on the island. They are almost 40cm long with their bushy tails accounting for almost half of this length. Although their name refers to the colour of their fur this can in fact vary from red through various shades of russet to almost black. They always have a white stomach and in winter have very noticeable ear tufts. They mainly eat nuts and seeds, supplemented in the spring and summer by young tree shoots and on occasion dried fungi.
Where
Red squirrels are found all round the island in both deciduous and coniferous woods. Brodick Country Park has a healthy population, which can be seen on the various walks through the park and surrounding woods.
When
Contrary to popular belief red squirrels don’t hibernate in the winter. The lack of foliage can make this the best time to spot them in the trees. The breeding season, in March and April, sees them chasing each other at speed through the trees in the quest for a mate.
